In the current job market, the possession of only a high school diploma is a limitation that few can afford. The high school graduate who has no plans to pursue higher education has few opportunities to gain meaningful employment. There is no doubt that college graduates are better prepared for the competition for jobs than those with only a high school education. High school students should realize that after graduation the few jobs available to them will be simple unskilled labor jobs, such as sales or food preparation. These limited choices make it difficult to develop a meaningful career with only a high school education. The job market is even more limited for the high school dropout. The few job choices for those that leave high school before graduation are usually labor intensive. The pay for this type of employment is usually the minimum possible. These simple jobs usually lack any possibility of promotion or self- improvement. At present, it is nearly impossible to survive with the lack-luster jobs that are available to the dropout.
The college graduate has a wider range of choices available. A college degree will open the door to many careers. The differences in salary between high school graduates and collage graduates is significant, between the college grad and the dropout it can be staggering. In the near future, automation and computer related systems will replace those jobs now being performed by those without college degrees. The advantage of this technological revolution will be more career opportunities in electronic and robotic fields. The biggest impact will be on those jobs related to computers and engineering. The training for these high technology related jobs will come from centers of higher learning. High school does not possess the ability to instruct, in detail, the material necessary for the career of the future.
For those that are now in high school, the possibility of gainful employment upon graduation is very small, and for the dropout it will soon be non-existent. Even the simplest degree may one day be not enough for a meaningful career. Any high school student who is looking forward must understand that in the future there will be no place to work without specialized training.
The basic unit of human social organization is the nuclear family, consisting of a mother father and children. In the last two centuries there have been a considerable number of changes which reshaped the family. In the time since the seventeenth century, the family has seen its most remarkable changes in social formation. In colonial New England the religious beliefs of the Puritans created a hierarchical society. The Puritan world had God at the top and the devil at the bottom. Mankind was placed at the mid-point of the social spectrum. Within this stratified society was the hierarchy of the family. The father was at the top and the children on the bottom.
The family of the seventeenth century colonial New England was a rigid social structure, with fixed roles for men, women, and children. The husband was supreme in the Puritan social order, master over his wife and children. The wife's duty was to care, clothe, and feed her children. The heroic struggle of the wife to raise her children to adulthood against the onslaught of infant mortality created strong emotional bonds. Healthy children of colonial New England were a commodity that few would usually possess. In the twentieth century the rigid structure of the past has given way to more adaptive and flexible family structures. In these modern times it is very well possible for a reversal of traditional roles; the woman may be the working leader of the family, and the man may take charge of the childrearing. The low rate of infant mortally in this century has lessened the vital importance controlling every aspect of children's lives. The social stratification of the past may have been a useful system, but in modern times the world changes very quickly and the family unit must make the necessary adaptations. In the struggle to survive it is not uncommon for women to even work in previous male dominated fields, and men to work in was once considered female rolls.
Differences between men and women go beyond the obvious physical differences in body type. In addition to those differences of body structure, there is some innate difference between the sexes. After several thousand generations of human beings natural selection has developed distinct psychological as well as physiological differences between men and women. Selection of vital survival attributes took place for the first 99% of human history. The development of these attributes may not be fully understood, but they exist today. Studies have shown that the early focus of a baby girl's concentration is more toward people, but the young male's attention is on inanimate objects. Visual orientation differs because of the different processes of cerebal hemispheres in the human brain. Females use both sides in a more equal manner, but males tend to specialize brain functions, right for artistic abilities, left for logical functions. The joint usage of both hemispheres increases the affinity for languages. Males' separate brain functions tend to promote more mathmaticlly related abilities.
An illusion of the differences in people is a contributing factor to stereotyping. A usual stereotyped belief is that girls are delicate objects in need of safe-guarding and their non- aggressive nature warrants constant protection from would be aggressors. The view on boys encourages independent and aggressive behaviors. Standard playthings for young girls are dolls and plastic tea sets, and the trucks, video games and toy guns make up most toys for boys at almost any age. The process of overcoming stereotyping is difficult butgreat strides of change have been made in recent times. In some areas technological changes are overcoming any learning differences between sexes. Comprehensive training techniques utilizing computers has compensated for any leaning complications that either men or women may have. Social pressures are breaking down the roles of men and women in family unit; however, the need for education rises above all else. Herein lies the true test of a person's earning potential. It is not gender that determines role within a family. It is education level.
